This is a low light ISO test between compact Sony RX100 II and full frame Sony Alpha A99 (equiped with Carl Zeiss 24-70 F2.8 Ssm lens). Both cameras were on a tripod and to reduce shake, all shots are taken with 10 seconds shutter delay.
Sony Alpha 99 is Sony's highest camera in A mount aiming professionals. The Carl Zeiss 24-70 F2.8 Ssm lens lens it has also one of the best lenses avaiable for this camera. In other words Sony Alpha A99 with CZ 24-70 lens is one of the best Sony Camera equipment one can own.
On the other hand Sony RX100 is just a "compact" camera with only 1 inch sensor. I really like to show you both cameras head to head so that you can see the difference in their sizes:
During the test Sony's in-body Steady Shot option was off in both cameras since they are on a tripod. White balance is set to AUTO, Scene is "Standard", DRO is OFF for both cameras. Point of views are same which is 70mm in full frame terms (around 50mm in APS-C focal lenght). Aperture is F4 for both cameras and High ISO reduction option is set to "normal" in both Sony Rx100 Mk2 and Sony A99
I'm sure you'll also agree that RX100 is competing with A99 incredibly despite its sensor size and even in very high ISOs like 6400. If you look very hard in 100%/150% zoom you can see RX100 lost some very minor details against A99 but this is just normal. Yet it competes very well in noise reduction and its even possible to say it matches full frame A99 in noise control if not slightly better.
