Lenses are tested at 90mm as this is their only common focal length. Test is performed with a Sony Alpha 99 (full frame) camera on tripod.
In the first comparison lenses are in their widest aperture which is F2.8 for Tamron 90mm F2.8 Di and F5 for Minolta 75-300mm F4.5-5.6 in 90mm. Both lenses has a little vignetting in this apertures but it seems Minolta's corner vignetting is a little more heavier than Tamron. Tamron also giving more details than Minolta even when its F2.8.
In the second comparison, Tamron is also stopped to F5 so both lenses are in the same aperture now. Tamron's vignetting is fully cured when stopped to F5. Its sharpness is also dramatically better than Minolta.
When both lenses are stopped down to F6.3, Minolta's vignetting is now better but it still lurkes in the corners. Tamron has no vignetting. In sharpness and details, Minolta is still no match to Tamron in this aperture.
In F8, Minolta cured its vignetting completely and its sharpness is also better but still nothing close to Tamron.
When stopped down to F13 Minolta tries to close the gap just a tad more but Tamron is still better with no discussion.
So the expected happens and Tamron 90mm F2.8 Di crashes Minolta 75-300mm F4.5-5.6 in every aspect. :) This is no surprise and even does not require a test to prove but I still hope this test will be helpful to somebody who owns one of the lens, plans the buy the other and wonders how much better Tamron 90mm F2.8 Di is in comparison to Minolta 75-300mm F4.5-5.6.
